Reading Comprehension

Students read Percy Jackson in class with access to the text as well as an audiobook. Students engage in regular comprehension checks to improve their reading ability.

Making Connections

Students engage in a study of archetypal heroes through Homer's The Odyssey and the story of Odysseus and identify commonalities between him and Percy.

Comparative Discussion

Students engage with the text as well as select episodes of the new show adaptation to consider narrative choices and how they affect the way an audience responds to the story.

The Hero's Journey

Students look at Percy Jackson as a hero's journey. They identify the main parts of the hero's journey and detail the ways in which it is presented in Percy's story.

My school site has many English Language Learners, and over my year here I've discovered that many students have difficulty completing assignments at home due to various roadblocks (lack of accessibility, homelessness, etc). To accommodate all students and ensure that they are reading, we read the book in class accompanied by an audiobook. Each week we read around 3 chapters, depending on their length. At the end of each week, students took a comprehension quiz.

In addition to comprehension quizzes, students were given vocabulary quizzes on most Fridays. Vocabulary was frontloaded at the beginning of each week using words they would come across in the novel.
